What is an ATS score check?

An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is software that employers use to collect applications, convert resumes into structured profiles, and let recruiters search, filter and move candidates through hiring stages. Most systems never show candidates a score. So an ATS score check is an estimate built by a separate tool: can your file be read cleanly, are your sections labelled the way parsers expect, and do your skills and job titles match what the employer is looking for?

It helps to separate three things that people often mix up. Parsing is the software turning your PDF or DOCX into text and fields such as name, email, employers and skills. Matching is comparing that text with a job description. Ranking is whatever the employer's recruiters do with the result, and that part is configured differently by every company. Our ATS score check covers the first two and gives you a transparent 0–100 estimate, which is why it works best as a fix-list rather than a pass-or-fail verdict.

One practical advantage of a rule-based ATS resume checker is consistency: the same resume and the same job description always produce the same score. There is no random guess behind the number, and every point you lose maps to a visible rule you can fix in minutes.

How applicant tracking systems work in 2026: the numbers

ATS adoption is close to universal at large employers. Jobscan, which checks the career sites of every Fortune 500 company each year, detected an ATS at 97.8% of them in 2025. Workday alone powered roughly four in ten (39.2%), ahead of SAP SuccessFactors at 13.2%. Smaller firms use lighter tools or even a shared inbox, but the workflow is broadly the same everywhere.

97.8%of Fortune 500 companies had a detectable ATS (Jobscan, 2025)
76.4%of surveyed recruiters search and rank by skills from the job description (Jobscan)
23 of 25recruiters said their ATS does not auto-reject resumes (Enhancv, 2025)
88%of employers say qualified people are screened out when resumes miss exact criteria (Harvard Business School & Accenture, 2021)
  1. Upload and parse. The system extracts text from your file and tries to sort it into fields.
  2. Store and structure. Your profile joins every other applicant for that job in one searchable database.
  3. Search, filter and rank. Recruiters search by skills, job titles, education, certifications or years of experience, and may add knockout questions such as work authorisation or location.
  4. Human review. A recruiter opens the profiles that surface, usually for a few seconds, and decides who moves forward.

Step three is why an ATS score check puts so much weight on keywords. When you apply, you are not only being read, you are being searched for. In Jobscan's recruiter survey, skills from the job description were the most common search term, followed by education, job title, licences and certifications, and years of experience. Harvard Business School and Accenture's 2021 Hidden Workers research reported that more than 90% of employers use filtering or ranking for mid-skill (94%) and high-skill (92%) candidates. Filtering is normal; the question is whether your resume survives it.

Does an ATS auto-reject your resume? What the research says

You have probably seen the claim that 75% of resumes are rejected by an ATS before a human sees them. According to Enhancv's analysis, that figure traces back to a 2012 vendor sales pitch rather than to a study. When Enhancv interviewed 25 US recruiters across more than ten ATS platforms, 23 of them (92%) said their system does not automatically reject resumes for formatting, design or content. Only two had configured any content-based rejection at all.

A July 2026 report from ClearanceJobs reached the same conclusion from a different angle. The only universally automated filters recruiters described were knockout questions tied to absolute requirements, such as work authorisation, security clearance, degrees, certifications or location. The bigger problem was volume: recruiters often pause or close a posting once a strong early batch arrives, so late applications are simply never opened.

Read this with a cool head. The Enhancv sample is small and US-based, and both Enhancv and Jobscan sell resume tools, so treat their numbers as indicative. Large campus drives in India may use heavier automated shortlisting than the recruiters in those surveys. The safe conclusion is not "ATS does not matter". It is that an ATS rarely rejects you but can easily bury you: if the parser cannot read your skills, or the right terms are missing, you do not surface when a recruiter searches.

That is the exact gap a good ATS score check closes. It tests whether your content is readable and findable, which is the part you control.

What is a good ATS score?

Treat the score as a position on a fix-list, not a grade. Every checker uses its own rules, so a 78 here and a 78 elsewhere mean different things. Within our tool, the bands below apply.

ScoreMeaningWhat to do next
80–100ExcellentApply now. Only polish wording.
65–79GoodAdd 3-5 missing keywords + numbers.
50–64AverageFix sections & formatting first.
Below 50Needs workRebuild with a single-column ATS template.

When you paste a real job description, 75+ is a sensible target. Chasing 100 usually backfires: the last few points tend to come from repeating keywords, and recruiters read your resume after the software does. A better finish line is a resume with no red parsing items, no missing must-have skills, and bullets that show results.

How this ATS score check works: 35 checks in 5 groups

Every check is a visible rule. Most score full, half or zero marks; the job-description match is continuous and reaches full marks at 75% keyword coverage. Each group's score is the average of its checks, and the final score is the weighted average of the five groups.

GroupChecksWeight (with JD)What it looks at

How keywords are extracted

With a job description, the tool counts single words and two-word phrases, removes filler words, and gives extra weight to known skills such as languages, tools, certifications and soft skills. It then keeps the top terms and checks them against your resume. Synonyms are normalised first, so JS counts as JavaScript, ReactJS as React and PowerBI as Power BI. Without a job description, it detects the closest role from your text and compares you with that role's typical skills, which is less precise, so the score is lower-stakes.

What the tool does not do

It reads up to the first four pages of a PDF, runs OCR on the first two pages of a scanned PDF, accepts files up to 10 MB, and processes everything in your browser. It cannot see your target employer's configuration, and it cannot verify that your claims are true.

What breaks ATS parsing (and a 60-second test)

Most parsing failures come from layout choices that look good to people but flatten badly into plain text:

Modern parsers cope with some of these better than older ones, but you cannot know which parser an employer runs, so a single column is the lowest-risk choice. Our guides on the single-column resume template and ATS-compatible resume format for 2026 explain the trade-offs, and the basic ATS resume template gives you a safe starting layout.

The copy-paste test

Open your final PDF, select all, and paste into a plain text editor. If the order is scrambled, text is missing, or your email has disappeared, a parser will struggle too. If the PDF fails, export a clean DOCX and test that. When the employer names a format, follow it. Otherwise a text-based PDF or a simple DOCX are both fine.

How to match keywords without stuffing

Because recruiters search by skills, your resume needs the same words the job uses. The aim is accuracy, not volume.

  1. Paste the full job description into the checker and list the must-have hard skills, tools, certifications and the job title.
  2. Use the employer's spelling. If the job says Power BI, do not write PowerBi. Where an acronym is common, write both forms once, for example "Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)".
  3. Show each skill in two places: once in your Skills section for searchability, and once inside a bullet that proves you used it.
  4. Mirror the job title in your headline or summary if it honestly describes you. Our guides on writing a resume summary and the key skills to put on a resume help you phrase it.
  5. Stop repeating. The checker starts deducting points when one skill appears more than six times.

Here is how a job-description phrase becomes a strong bullet. These are illustrative examples; use only what is true for you.

Job description saysWeak resume lineStronger resume line
Power BI dashboards, SQLWorked on reportsBuilt 6 Power BI dashboards on SQL data, cutting weekly MIS reporting time by 40%
Google Ads, lead generationResponsible for adsRan Google Ads campaigns that generated 1,200 leads in 3 months at ₹180 per lead
Tally, GST filingHandled accountsMaintained books in Tally and filed monthly GST returns for 25 clients
React, REST APIMade a websiteBuilt a React app that consumes a REST API and serves 2,000 monthly users

The checker's red keyword chips are built for this: click one and it drafts a bullet frame with a placeholder for your metric. For a deeper list of terms by profession, see our guide to resume keywords for ATS in India.

A warning on shortcuts. Hiding keywords in white text does not work. Parsers read raw text, so hidden terms show up in the parsed profile and to anyone who opens it. It reads as stuffing and can damage trust in the rest of your application.

ATS score check for freshers and Indian job seekers

Volume is the defining feature of fresher hiring in India. TalentRecruit reports that fresher postings routinely receive between 500 and 5,000 applications per role, and career mentor Ankur Warikoo has put typical conversion at 1–2% for roles with 500–1,000 applicants. Under that pressure, recruiters lean on filters and quick scans, so a resume that is easy to parse and skim has a real edge.

Portals such as Naukri and LinkedIn run their own search and ranking, which we cannot see. The fundamentals still apply: readable text, relevant keywords and clear headings. For a fresher resume, these are the points the checker rewards:

Need a layout to start from? Try the fresher web developer template, the fresher software developer template, the fresher accountant template or the computer science student template. Our fresher resume format guide for India and the guide to a career objective for a resume cover the sections around them. Apply early too: recruiters increasingly close postings within days.

ATS keywords and templates by role

The table lists the skill terms our checker looks for when no job description is pasted, with an ATS-friendly template for each role. Always prefer the exact wording in the job description you are applying to.

Teachers, engineers and bankers can start from the secondary school teacher resume, the mechanical engineer resume and the banking and financial advisor resume. If you are weighing formats, our guide to the chronological resume format shows when it works best.

A 30-minute workflow to raise your ATS score

  1. Run a baseline. Upload your resume, paste the job description, and note your score and the red items.
  2. Fix parsing first. Move to a single column, use standard headings (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects) and put contact details in the body, not the header.
  3. Add the missing hard skills you genuinely have. Use the red keyword chips to draft bullets, then replace the placeholders with real numbers.
  4. Quantify your top five bullets. Add percentages, rupee amounts, users, clients or time saved.
  5. Cut weak phrases and buzzwords. Replace "responsible for" and "team player" with what you did and what changed.
  6. Re-run the check. Aim for 75+ against that job. Stop when only minor items remain.
  7. Export and test. Save a text-based PDF or DOCX, run the copy-paste test, name the file FirstName_LastName_Role.pdf, and download the PDF report to track progress.

Mistakes that quietly lower your ATS score

What an ATS score cannot tell you

Be wary of any checker that promises a guaranteed shortlist. A score cannot know how your target employer configured its system, which recruiter will search, or how strong the other applicants are. It cannot judge whether your achievements are impressive, and it cannot replace a referral or a well-written LinkedIn profile, which recruiters often check alongside your resume (see LinkedIn profile vs resume).

Remember, too, that a person usually makes the final call, and quickly. The widely quoted Ladders eye-tracking study from 2018 put the average first look at around 7.4 seconds. The best use of an ATS score check is to clear the technical hurdles so those seconds land on your strongest evidence.

Sources and methodology

This guide combines our own rule set (the 35 checks above) with published research. Several sources come from resume-software vendors, and surveys have small samples, so we use their figures as indicators and name the limits where they matter. Reviewed 16 October 2026.

ATS score check FAQ

What is an ATS score check?

An ATS score check estimates how well recruiting software (ATS) can read and rank your resume. It checks parsing, standard section names, formatting and how many job-specific keywords you have. Our tool gives a score out of 100 with 35 transparent checks.

What is a good ATS score?

65–79 is good and 80+ is excellent. When you paste a specific job description, aim for 75+. Below 60 usually means parsing or keyword gaps that can push your resume down recruiter search results. Every company's ATS is configured differently, so use the score as a fix-list, not a guarantee.

Is this ATS checker really free and private?

Yes, 100% free, unlimited and private. Your PDF/DOCX/Image is read inside your browser using WASM (pdf.js + tesseract.js). It is never uploaded to our server.

How is the ATS score calculated? 35 checks?

We use 5 groups: Keywords (35%), Content (25%), Sections (20%), Format (15%), Readability (5%). With a job description, keywords are extracted by frequency-weighted analysis of single words and two-word phrases, boosted by a skills dictionary, and matched with synonyms (e.g., JS = JavaScript). Without one, we compare against the skills of the role we detect in your resume and the Keywords weight drops to 20%.

Why is my ATS score different on other sites?

Every checker uses its own rules and weights, so scores are never directly comparable. We show every rule that failed and how to fix it. A real ATS does not show candidates a score, so treat ours as a transparent estimate of parsing and keyword gaps.

How to increase ATS score to 90+?

1) Paste the exact Job Description 2) Add missing hard skills exactly as written 3) Use single-column layout with headings: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills 4) Start bullets with action verbs + numbers (%, ₹, users).

Does it work for freshers and Indian resumes?

Yes. It understands fresher profiles (Projects, Internships, CGPA, Certifications) and Indian keywords like Tally, GST, etc. No penalty for no work experience if projects are present.

Do ATS systems automatically reject resumes?

Rarely. In a 2025 Enhancv survey of 25 US recruiters, 23 (92%) said their ATS does not auto-reject resumes for formatting, design or content. Knockout questions such as work authorisation, degree or location, recruiter filters and sheer application volume are the real gates. The sample is small, but parsing errors still hurt because filters cannot find what the parser cannot read.

Is PDF or DOCX better for ATS?

Both work when the file is text-based and single-column. If the employer names a format, use it. If your PDF fails the copy-paste test (scrambled order or missing text), submit a clean DOCX instead. Never submit a scanned image as your only version.

Does hiding keywords in white text work?

No. Parsers read raw text, so hidden keywords appear in the parsed profile and for any human who opens it. It looks like keyword stuffing, can get an application flagged and adds nothing a recruiter can verify. Add each important skill once in your Skills section and once inside a real bullet instead.

Why does my score drop after I paste a job description?

Keywords carry 35% of the score when a job description is present (20% without it), and the tool now measures the exact skills that job asks for. A drop usually means your resume lacks those terms. Click a red keyword to draft a bullet, add it only where it is true, then run the check again.

How often should I run an ATS score check?

For every application. Paste that job's description, fix the missing hard skills and weak bullets, and re-check. A high score does not guarantee an interview; it only removes avoidable parsing and keyword gaps so a recruiter can find and read your best points.
